the Mental Relaxation: How To Create Achievable Goals for the New Year

First, let me say Happy New Years to each and every one of our readers! The ritual for the first few days of every year is to write a list of goals, resolutions, plans, etc. of items or agendas that one wants to accomplish. Usually everyone starts off strong by hitting the gym early, going to the library and doing research, but by MLK weekend the momentum is gone and its back to the same ole, same ole. That cannot happen this year...why you ask?! Because this year is not only a new year, but the start of a new decade. This year is pinnacle to lining up the next 10 years of your life, so it’s doubly important to make it count.

Now I'm not one that believes in creating resolutions, but I agree that everyone needs to create a plan for their year. As the adage goes "People don't plan to fail, they just fail to plan" hence why it is important to develop some sort of strategy for your life that will guide your path to true accomplishment.

I hear a few of you in my head right now say..."but Ran, how can I create a legitimate plan? How can I stay motivated?" Easiest answer to the first question is to establish a large goal(s) then establish small, attainable goals that lead to the accomplishment of your ultimate goal(s). For example, if your goal is to save $2000, the easiest way to accomplish this goal is to save $167 a month or $38.47 a week. See when you break that goal down into smaller achievable goals; it makes the lofty goal more attainable.

How do you stay motivated? The easiest way to stay motivated is goal accomplishment. By establishing goals in this manner one will be able to see the achievements develop before their eyes. Let’s go back to the initial example which was trying to save $2,000 in one year. When you make the first few deposits, it will not seem like much. However, after a month or two, one will see a few hundred dollars…again goal accomplishment before your eyes. When you see that, it will always keep you motivated. Even when you get down and out, again using this example, you can log into your savings account and see what you’ve done thus far and that will help to keep you on track. Self Motivation is and will always be hard, but as long as you focus on your ultimate objective, there is nothing you will not be able to accomplish.

When creating your goals today, write down your goal for the year and then write smaller goals that will lead to accomplishing your overall objective by 12/31/2010 and/or 12/31/2019. Do this and you will be on your path to a more successful New Year and New Decade.
